What is Tonsillitis? Tonsillitis is the medical term for a tonsil infection, which results in swelling and inflammation of the tonsils. It can be caused by: Viruses (common cold, flu, etc.) Bacteria (such as strep throat) Allergies Upper respiratory infections Symptoms of Tonsillitis Common signs and symptoms include: Red, swollen tonsils White or yellow patches on the tonsils Sore throat and difficulty swallowing Fever and chills Tender, swollen lymph nodes Bad breath Headache or stiff neck In younger children, additional signs may include: Irritability and crankiness Excessive drooling Refusal to eat or difficulty feeding
